Western Grebe: Ottawa #228

I had missed a Western Grebe last year and when I heard about this bird I just had to run out and see it.  Unlike last year, after about 10 minutes scanning,  I was lucky enough to get it in my binoculars

Bird #228 on my Ottawa list, a great find.  Thanks for the call my friend.

Below I have the crappy photo I took today of the Western Grebe, in bad lighting and at great distance.  #2 is an image of a Western Grebe in lovely light and below that a close relative the Clark’s Grebe, for comparison.

Thanks for looking…Looks like next year I can resume my Birdquest, I can now get travel insurance…..Yee Haaa

Algonquin Park Splendor

A few weeks ago during the height of the fall colors, I took a drive up to meet a fellow photographer, Andrew McLachlan to photograph the fall colors.  I took plenty of images of landscapes which I rarely do and had a great day enjoying the colors.

Andrew McLachlan’s website www.andrewmclachlan.ca , check out his blog some good tips and lovely photos.

I tried to create HDR’s of some of the better areas of color.  There is various software on the market which allows you to create these images Photomatix’s and Nik HDR Effects being two of the best.

“HDR orHigh Dynamic Range,  is a digital photography technique whereby multiple exposures of the same scene are layered and merged using image editing software to create a more realistic image, or a dramatic effect.  The combined exposures can display a wider range of tonal values than what the digital camera is capable of recording in a single image.”
